The 1st Pennsylvania Regiment was one of 8 companies assembled for service in the Continental Army. In conjunction with their zealous attitudes and great skill, the men in the regiment followed the motto “Refuse to be subjugated.” -

Kosciuszko was a Polish engineer, statesman, and military leader. After learning of the American Revolution, Kościuszko, a man of revolutionary aspirations, sympathetic to the American cause and an advocate of human rights, sailed for America and was assigned to the Continental Army. In his will (executed by his friend Thomas Jefferson) he directed that his estate be used to free and educate enslaved people. Its legacy was used to found the Kościuszko School, a school for formerly enslaved people, in Newark, New Jersey. -

George Washington was commander in chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
After leading the colonial forces to victory over the British, Washington rose to fame as a national hero and became the first U.S. President, serving two terms before dying less than three years later. Washington owned over 300 enslaved people, though he became opposed to the practice at the end of his life and wrote in his will to free them all after his wife’s death. -

NAPOLEON, 2022

Napoleon Bonaparte was a French military leader and emperor who conquered much of Europe in the early 19th century. Known for his ambition and skills as a military strategist, Napoleon continued to gain power and expand his empire until his failed attempt to invade Russia in 1812. He revolutionized military organization and training; sponsored the Napoleonic Code, the prototype of later civil-law codes; reorganized education; and established the long-lived Concordat with the papacy. He was finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo and was exiled to the island of Saint Helena, where he died at 51. -
JOHN STARK, 2022

Stark was a New Hampshire native who served as an officer in the British Army during the French and Indian war and a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He is known for his heroism at the battles of Bunker Hill and Bennington. “Live Free or Die,” the New Hampshire State Motto, comes from a toast written by Stark. -

Rochambeau was a nobleman and general who commanded the French expeditionary force during the American Revolution. His most notable contribution was in 1781 during the Yorktown Campaign, in which he collaborated with George Washington to force the surrender of the British army. After the war he returned to France and was promoted by Louis XVI to Marshal of France. He continued to correspond with Washington throughout his life. -

Ezra Brooks was a fictional character and the name of a Kentucky bourbon brand introduced in 1957 to compete against the market leader, Jack Daniels. In the 1970s and 80s Ezra Brooks joined the figurative decanter trend to combat falling sales. Several owners later, the label continues to be produced today by Lux Row Distillers in Bardstown, Kentucky. -

Their father, Giuseppe Galliano, was an Italian officer of the Royal Italian Army of the First Italo-Ethiopian War. In 1769 they found their way to the American colonies and joined the fight for Independence. After the war, they started questioning their militaristic heritage, went into therapy, and enjoyed a 'second act' as motivational speakers and progressive thinkers. -

George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore was an English politician who achieved success as a member of parliament and as Secretary of State under King James. After becoming interested in the British colonization of America, Calvert settled in what is now the state of Maryland, creating a sanctuary for practicing Roman Catholics. After Calvert died, his second son became the first official governor of the Province of Maryland. Today, the state flag of Maryland is still the banner of his family’s coat-of-arms. -

Jefferson was an American Founding Father, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, minister to France, and served two terms as the third President of the United States. One of his acts as president was eliminating the unpopular whiskey tax. Eventually, he retired to his house in Monticello. Despite working tirelessly to establish a new nation founded upon principles of freedom and egalitarianism, Jefferson owned over 600 enslaved people during his lifetime, the most of any U.S. president. -

Liquore Galliano L'Autentico, known more commonly as Galliano, is a sweet herbal liqueur produced in Italy. It was created in 1896 by Tuscan distiller and brandy producer Arturo Vaccari and named after Giuseppe Galliano, an Italian officer of the Royal Italian Army of the First Italo-Ethiopian War. -
BARON VON STEUBEN, 2022

Von Steuben was a Prussian military man hired by George Washington to help the Continental Army. He is known for his bravery, discipline, and grit, and brought these qualities to the American troops. Von Steuben was also openly gay at a time when same sex relationships were punished as a crime. After the war, von Steuben legally adopted two aides-de-camp, William North and Benjamin Walker, a common practice among gay men before same-sex marriage was legal. They lived together and inherited his estate when he died. -
